Events and History from Gelvin, Dungiven, Co. Derry, Ireland.
It was decided in the Autumn of 2009 that, due to difficulties encountered when attempting to paint the side of the building facing Legavallon Road and the gable towards Ballymacallion, we should re-plaster both walls.
Application for financial assistance was made to the Big Lottery Fund (Awards for All) and we were awarded a grant of £3358. Work is expected to commence in the next 2/3 months and should take 3/4 weeks to complete. We are grateful to the Big Lottery for their assistance and our chairman Henry Forsythe comments ''we thank the Big Lottery through their Awards for All scheme for agreeing to help us with this work, which when completed, will guarantee the future of the building for many years hence and it will also enhance the appearance of this landmark on the main Dungiven/Coleraine road''.
Replastering has now been completed (26th May 2010) and the various stages in the process can be viewed on the photo blog. We again extend our thanks to Big Lottery Fund for assisting us with this project as without their financial help this essential work might not have been undertaken. In a few weeks time we will require to repaint the windows and the area recently replastered. We now have a solid, weatherproof building which will serve the people of the area for many years hence.
